Zwaag

Zwaag used to be an authentic West-Frisian linear village with a few side streets such as the Balkweit, het Laantje and the Unjerpad. After 1970s the village grew significantly as a spill-over area of the city of Hoorn, and its old village structure is mostly lost. The annual carnival is celebrated extensively with a long parade of beautifully decorated carriages; it attracts over 50.000 visitors every year, which is remarkable for a village located far north of the traditional carnival region. Since 1971, every five years, during the Pentecost weekend, the local “Beiers Festival” draws in brass bands from the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
