WijdenesWijdenes is a rural village bordering the Markermeer with many lovely farmhouses. It probably derives its name from Roelof of Wienesse, who settled in the village in the 9th century and built a castle. Centuries later Floris the 5th took over control of this castle and strengthened it after his military victory over the West-Frisians. After his death his angry enemies destroyed it and none of it remains; archeologists speculate that it was probably built outside the dike, since divers have found concrete bricks that were typical for its era about 250 meters from the shore. The old Stofmolen from 1911 has been fully renovated and is still operational. |
