TwiskIt seems that time has stood still in this picturesque and monumental village. Its village centre is registered as part of Dutch cultural heritage and houses numerous national monuments. The many beautiful antique (Haubarg) farmhouses and residences attest to its affluent past. It can be found as “Twisca” on old maps from 1245. The Reformed Church houses the museum “De Karckezolder” which documents the village’s history. At the outskirts of Twisk in the direction of Abbekerk is the Bennemeer, one of the oldest polders of Westfriesland. In recent years many bicycle and walking paths have been built that allow visitors to easily reach the nature reserve near the Westfriese Omringdijk. The historic steam tram Hoorn-Medemblik always stops in Twisk at the classic, well renovated station. The event of the year is the traditional Westfrisian “Ringsteken”, with its beautifully decorated carriages and participants in authentic costumes. Every other year in spring Twisk transforms itself into a village of art under the project title “Kunst in Kerk, Kamer en Koegang”(art in church, living room and stable). |
