Sint Maarten

Sint Maarten was originally founded as a fishing village but has since been protected from the water by the Westfriese Omringdijk. Many small dike breaches caused small lakes or “wielen” to emerge around the village. Several monumental (Haubarg) farmhouses are located nearby. The statue “De Keuvelaars” in front of the village hall refers to the West-Frisian tradition of “Keuvelen” on Saint Martin’s name day (11 November), when children go from door to door with lanterns and chants to collect candy.
