OudorpOudorp or “Old Village” is certainly worth its name: it was founded in the 11th century, although by now it mostly has merged with the city of Alkmaar. The village history is easy to trace along numerous characteristic sites, such as the White Church and a number of windmills lining de Molenkade. The Ambachtsmolen and the wheat mill “Het Roode Hert” (“The red deer”) conjure up the ghosts of ages past, when mighty mills ground the wheat, drained the polders and guarded the water levels. |
