Opperdoes

Opperdoes is mostly known for its local potato produce, the “Opperdoezer Ronde”, a brand that is increasingly popular with consumers. This small round potato can only be grown in the special ‘zavel’ soil found in Opperdoes and in a small part of the Wieringermeer. Since 1996 the potato type has been registered by the European Union as a protected regional brand name. Opperdoes is known in the region as the “Orange Village” because of its monarchist residents. On particular anniversaries of the monarchy the entire village is decorated and partially closed off in the days between Kingsday (April 27th) and Liberation Day (May 5th). Since 1903 Opperdoes used to have its own vegetable auction that is currently no longer in use. Locals refer to the village as “Little Giethoorn” because of the many little bridges that cross its canals and lead to farmhouses and residences. The monumental steam tram from Hoorn to Medemblik passes by right behind the village.
