Broek op LangedijkBroek op Langedijk or simply “Broek” was founded in a swampy area that 13th century farmers turned into many different islands. This history gave the village its name of the “realm of thousand islands”. There are still parts of the village encircled by water and linked together by little bridges. Broek op Langedijk is particularly known for its auction called “Broeker Veiling”, the oldest vegetable auction in Europe and the only one where produce is transported over water. Boats loaded with cabbage and other produce can be steered right into the auction hall. Nowadays the auction has been turned into a museum. |
