Alkmaar

Alkmaar is the third-largest city of the province of North Holland and is known as the Cheese Capital of West-Frisia due to its famous cheese market. This historical city offers visitors from throughout the region scenic canals, old courtyards, monumental buildings with beautiful façades and a lively centre with many shops, museums, bars and restaurants. Some of the highlights of Alkmaar include the Dutch Cheese Museum in the stately Waaggebouw, the impressive Grote Kerk and – for beer lovers – the National Beer Museum “De Boom”. Alkmaar is also the proud home of AZ Football Club, the winner of the Dutch national football league of 2009.
