Aartswoud

Aartswoud is located directly on the West Frisian Omringdijk and was formerly a seaport at the Zuiderzee. The main economic activity of the original population was fishing and whaling. In those times the small town was populated by just over 500 inhabitants.
The most striking building is the Protestant church dating from 1884. It is adorned with a 16th century tower containing a very beautiful organ.
The story goes that the square and flat topped tower of the church served as a lighthouse, as in those days the Aartswoud coastline was known to be very dangerous. Another ancient landmark is the former local pub which was built in the 15th century and now used as living House. Adjacent is the nature area of the Weel Polder, ideal for walking, cycling and bird watching. Also iconic for the village is the windmill Westuit number 7. In 2012 the beautiful Cattle Museum Aat Grootes was established, giving Westfriesland yet another tourist attraction.
