Wognum

Wognum, situated right at the A7 highway, originally was an agricultural settlement and can trace its history back to the year 900. In the nearby polder “Baarsdorpermeer”an old fen river emerged and runs along the Zwaagdijk into the town of Medemblik. At the beautiful rural Zomerdijk stands the “Huis van Oud”, a small farmer’s residence that now houses a museum. In the 19th and early 20th century Wognum became famous for its men’s choir “Jacob Kwast”, also known as the “Wognummers”, who were precursors to the current “Westfries Mannenkoor”.
Just outside the village an old windmill graces the Oude Gouw in the nature reserve “Kerkepolder”. Cyclists can enjoy the windmills and polders around Wognum. The four-hectare vineyard “Saalhof” has become increasingly well known. The historic steam tram between Hoorn and Medemblik stops at the beautifully renovated station. The municipality of Medemblik, of which Wognum forms a part, has recently moved into the visually striking buildings of the former DSB-bank.
